El presidente paraguayo, Fernando Lugo, reconoció el lunes la paternidad de un niño de casi dos años fruto de una relación con una joven cuando todavía era obispo de la Iglesia Católica, un anuncio que amenaza con dañar su imagen y debilitarle políticamente.
La inesperada revelación puso punto final a días de especulaciones tras la presentación de una demanda judicial que exigía a Lugo el reconocimiento del menor, que causaron un revuelo mediático en plena Semana Santa.
"Es cierto que hubo una relación con Viviana Carillo. Ante ello asumo todas las responsabilidades que pudieran derivar de tal hecho, reconociendo la paternidad del niño", dijo Lugo en un mensaje televisado.
"A partir de este momento y atendiendo al interés superior, a la privacidad del niño, a las altas responsabilidades que al mismo tiempo me impone el ejercicio de la presidencia, no formularé más declaraciones sobre el tema", agregó.
El anuncio coincidió con el inicio del proceso judicial por parte de una jueza de la ciudad de Encarnación, tras la presentación el miércoles de la semana pasada de la demanda de parte de dos abogados que luego fueron desautorizados por la madre del niño.
Según el documento, Lugo y la joven mantuvieron una larga relación que se inició cuando éste aún era obispo en el departamento de San Pedro.
Lugo renunció posteriormente al sacerdocio para entrar en la política y, tras haber sido elegido presidente el 20 de abril, obtuvo una inédita dispensa del Papa Benedicto XVI para ejercer el cargo.
