El Tribunal Supremo condenó al miembro de los GRAPO Manuel Pérez Martínez a siete años de cárcel por el secuestro de Publio Cordón en 1995 y reiteró la sentencia a 28 años de prisión para Fernando Silva Sande, ex dirigente de la misma organización, según un auto judicial difundido el martes.
La sentencia de la Sala de lo Penal del Supremo admite parcialmente el recurso planteado por la mujer de Cordón, Pilar Muro, contra la sentencia de la Audiencia de diciembre de 2007 en la que se absolvió a Pérez Martínez. El Supremo considera probado que es autor, por omisión, de un delito de detención ilegal con exigencia de rescate, según el auto.
El paradero de Publio Cordón sigue siendo un enigma, aunque la Guardia Civil ha rastreado en los últimos meses sin éxito una zona del sur de Francia después de que Silva Sande confesara que había enterrado su cadáver tras el fallecimiento accidental del empresario, que presuntamente se habría tirado por la ventana del edificio donde lo escondieron en la Provenza francesa.
Cordón fue secuestrado cerca de su domicilio de Zaragoza el 27 de junio de 1995 por los Grupos Revolucionarios Antifascistas Primero de Octubre. La familia pagó 400 millones en París por su liberación y sus captores dijeron que lo liberaron en agosto de 1995 en Barcelona.
La familia nunca creyó la versión de los hechos de la banda armada, que llegó a decir que el empresario había decidido fugarse e iniciar una nueva vida bajo otra identidad.
En 2005, a los 10 años de su desaparición, se le dio oficialmente por fallecido.
La sentencia del Supremo confirma además la absolución de Isabel Llaquet, acusada de ordenar el secuestro de Cordón, que en el momento de su desaparición era presidente de la aseguradora PREVIASA y del grupo hospitalario Quirón.
