R. Allen Stanford, a quien el gobierno de Estados Unidos acusa por un fraude de 8.000 millones de dólares, debe comparecer hoy ante un tribunal federal en Richmond, capital de Virginia (EEUU), donde le leerán los cargos en su contra.
Este multimillonario texano, de 59 años y presidente del Grupo Financiero Stanford, y quien sostiene que es inocente de los delitos que se le imputan, se entregó ayer en Texas a agentes de la Oficina Federal de Investigaciones (FBI).
En febrero pasado la Comisión de Valores acusó a la operación financiera dirigida por Stanford por numerosas infracciones de las leyes estadounidenses sobre valores, y una estafa con certificados de depósito que ha afectado a miles de inversionistas.
Stanford es el primer estadounidense nombrado "caballero" por el gobierno de Antigua y Barbuda un país de la Commonwealth (mancomunidad británica de naciones).
La acusación civil formulada por la Comisión de Valores sostiene que Stanford y los principales funcionarios de su grupo de compañías defraudaron a los clientes aconsejándoles que adquirieran certificados de depósito del Banco Internacional Stanford, que tiene su sede en Antigua.
En abril otro de los acusados, el ex jefe financiero de Stanford, James Davis, prometió que cooperaría con los investigadores federales.
La jefa de inversiones de la compañía matriz de Stanford, Laura Pendergest Holt, encara cargos criminales de obstrucción en la investigación de la Comisión de Valores, que sostiene que la mujer mintió acerca de lo que sabía sobre las actividades de la firma.
