Unión Progreso y Democracia (UPyD), el partido creado por Rosa Díez con la intención declarada de abrir un nuevo espacio político a costa de PSOE y PP, logró ayer duplicar su porcentaje de apoyos en las urnas apenas un año después de las elecciones generales, que supusieron su estreno en el escenario político. A pesar de la alta abstención, o quizás gracias a ella, la candidatura encabezada por Francisco Sosa Wagner se ha convertido en la quinta más votada y se ha hecho con un escaño en Estrasburgo.
En las generales de 2008, UPyD consiguió 306.079 votos, 132.095 de ellos en Madrid. Sus papeletas sumaron el 3,7% de los votos válidos emitidos en Madrid, lo que le valió a Rosa Díez un escaño en el Congreso, pero sólo el 1,19% en el conjunto de España.
15 meses después, en el contexto de las elecciones europeas, UPyD ha mejorado notablemente esas cifras. Su voto en España ha subido hasta los 446.000 –un 45% más– y en Madrid ha alcanzado los 154.000 –un incremento del 17%–. La consecuencia es que el partido de Rosa Díez ha conseguido reducir su dependencia de los votantes de Madrid, que hace un año representaban casi la mitad de su respaldo en las urnas. Con todo, y aunque la cifra se ha reducido, sigue siendo importante (34%).
Rosa Díez celebró el escaño conseguido y destacó que su partido se ha convertido en la tercera fuerza política en 32 capitales de provincia. La líder de UPyD declaró que los resultados electorales evidencian que en España hay una fuerza política emergente llamada a ser alternativa al PP y al PSOE, dos partidos que, en su opinión, han hecho la peor campaña electoral de la democracia, informa Efe.
