La número uno del mundo, la rusa Dinara Safina, abandonó lesionada su primer encuentro de la Copa Masters femenino con sólo dos juegos y diez minutos de partido transcurridos y, de paso, facilitó la primera victoria de la serbia Jelena Jankovic, que el martes había perdido en su debut frente la bielorrusa Victoria Azarenka.
Safina, que ponía en juego en Doha su condición de número uno, que le puede volver a arrebatar la estadounidense Serena Williams, se retiró con lágrimas en los ojos tras la finalización del segundo juego. Rompió a llorar en su silla tras explicar a Jankovic que estaba lesionada en la espalda.
"No sabía que estaba lesionada. Lo lamento. Seguramente ella se ha resentido y el dolor se le ha acentuado. Espero que la próxima vez que coincidamos esté en buenas condiciones y podamos ofrecer el espectáculo que aquí no ha sido posible", dijo la tenista serbia.
Safina, que abandonó rápidamente la pista de juego, podría ser reemplazada por la rusa Vera Zvonareva, primera suplente de la competición, y disputar ya el jueves el encuentro previsto con la danesa Carolien Wozniacki, que previamente logró su primer triunfo en la competición tras batir en tres sets a la bielorrusa Victoria Azarenka (1-6, 6-4 y 7-6).
