La estadounidense, ganadora de 11 torneos de Grand Slam y que va a por un quinto título en Melbourne, jugó con su pierna derecha vendada pero no pareció incómoda al llevar el partido a su conclusión en una hora y 13 minutos.
número 72 en el ranking de la WTA-, disparando 26 tiros ganadores para quedarse con el segundo set en sólo 33 minutos.
