Seúl anunció hoy el envío de unos 200 soldados a Afganistán para proteger a sus trabajadores civiles de los programas de reconstrucción y aumentar el papel internacional del país, informó la agencia surcoreana Yonhap.
Según el portavoz del Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores, Moon Tae-yong, las tropas no participarán en acciones de combate a no ser que vayan orientadas a proteger a los Equipos de Reconstrucción Provincial en Afganistán.
En 2007, Corea del Sur retiró a más de 200 militares médicos e ingenieros que tenía desplegados en Afganistán tras la muerte de dos civiles surcoreanos que fueron secuestrados por los talibán junto a otras 21 personas.
Según fuentes cercanas al Gobierno consultadas por Yonhap, el Ejecutivo surcoreano quiere establecer su propio Equipo de Reconstrucción Provincial con 130 trabajadores civiles y entre 200 y 300 efectivos militares para protegerlos.
Actualmente, Corea del Sur tiene desplegados 25 médicos y educadores dentro de la base estadounidense en Bagram, al norte de Kabul, en uno de los campamentos de reconstrucción dirigidos por Estados Unidos.
"El Gobierno afgano nos ha pedido por diversos canales el aumento de nuestro apoyo para la estabilización y reconstrucción de Afganistán, por lo que hemos decidido expandir nuestro papel en los Equipos de Reconstrucción Provincial", dijo el portavoz surcoreano de Asuntos Exteriores.
No obstante, el Gobierno surcoreano no especificó el número de trabajadores, el número preciso de tropas ni el lugar donde se ubicará el campamento de Corea del Sur.
El anuncio surcoreano se produce dos semanas antes de que el presidente estadounidense, Barack Obama, visite Seúl como parte de una gira por Asia que le llevará también a Japón, Singapur y China.
