Las autoridades sirias pidieron hoy a la Liga Árabe que convoque una reunión urgente tras el asalto israelí a la "Flotilla de la Libertad", que transportaba ayuda humanitaria a Gaza, informó la agencia oficial de noticias siria SANA.
Siria es el primer país árabe que ha reaccionado oficialmente al asalto, en el que, según la televisión israelí Canal 10, murieron al menos catorce personas y varias decenas resultaron heridas.
Según SANA, Damasco hizo esta petición a través de su representante en la Liga Árabe, Yusef Ahmed, quien la entregó a este organismo con el objetivo de analizar las repercusiones de la intervención israelí contra la flotilla, compuesta por seis barcos con más de 750 personas a bordo.
El secretario general de la Liga Árabe, Amro Musa, ha convocado de momento una reunión de emergencia para mañana del consejo permanente de esta organización panárabe con el objetivo de analizar "el terrible crimen cometido por las tropas israelíes".
En un comunicado esta organización, compuesta por 22 países condenó el asalto militar israelí que calificó de "crimen" y de "acción terrorista".
En enero de 2009, la Liga Árabe no consiguió el apoyo del mínimo número de países miembros necesarios para celebrar una cumbre extraordinaria de jefes de Estado para analizar la situación en Gaza tras una ofensiva militar israelí contra este territorio palestino, lo que profundizó las divergencias entre los Estados árabes.
Para que los países árabes se reúnan en una cumbre se necesita el apoyo de al menos 15 de los 22 países de la Liga Árabe.
Desde Damasco también, Hamás instó a la comunidad internacional y a los países árabes a que pidan cuentas a Israel por sus actos.
Hasta el momento, el Ejército israelí ha reconocido en un comunicado la muerte de diez activistas durante la toma de control de las naves, que tuvo lugar esta madrugada a unas veinte millas de la franja palestina.
