En el aparcamiento de Bethpage, el campo público de Long Island, en Nueva York, el tráfico no cesa durante la noche. Algunos de los 35.000 jugadores anónimos, que sueñan al año con emular, en esos mismos greenes, el triunfo de Tiger Woods en el US Open de 2002, prefieren dormir en sus automóviles para no llegar tarde a sus tempraneras horas de salida. "Tenemos muchas peticiones a diario, por lo que hay que ser escrupulosos con el horario", explica un funcionario de Bethgate.
El pasado lunes, Tiger Woods aparcaba su Buick alrededor de las seis y media de la madrugada. "Quería estar ya en el campo sobre las siete para evitar el tumulto de la gente", explica el número uno. Junto a Hank Haney, su instructor, Tiger necesitaba conocer esos cambios que han suavizado la malevolencia de Bethgate.

"Él -por Nicklaus- sigue siendo el mejor", incide Tiger para cerrar el debate.
La cuenta atrás podría haberse alterado en Augusta. Pero allí Woods evidenció sus pocos días de preparación en las dos primeras jornadas. Ahora, su propuesta aparece plena. La ausencia de dolor, por primera vez en diez años, en la rodilla izquierda ha reinventado el dibujo de su drive.
Su nueva articulación le permite un mayor giro de la rodilla que se traduce en un aumento de la elongación de su cuerpo al efectuar le pegada. De esta manera, su bola ha ganado distancia al lograr que sus brazos finalicen más arriba la fase final del movimiento del drive. Su solvencia, sin embargo, ha perdido adeptos ante el drama personal que vive Phil Mickelson.
Amy, su mujer, a la que se le ha diagnosticado cáncer de mama, quiere el trofeo junto a su cama. "Yo también lo quiero", asegura Sergio García. Él puede romper la sequía europea en el US Open que prevalece desde el título del inglés Jacklin en 1970.
