Tres personas murieron y decenas resultaron heridas el jueves en una explosión ocurrida en una embarcación que transportaba 49 inmigrantes a la isla de Navidad, en Australia, según informó el jueves la policía.
La embarcación, que se cree transportaba 49 personas provenientes de Afganistán, había sido interceptada por las autoridades australianas y estaba siendo remolcada a Darwin cuando se produjo la explosión, explicó el sargento Greg Lambert, de la policía de Australia Oeste.
"Se cree que ocurrió una explosión en la sala de máquinas del barco", indicó Lambert. "Se cree que tres personas murieron, dos están desaparecidas y otras resultaron heridas", agregó.
La embarcación fue interceptada cerca de la isla Ashmore, de Australia.
Trece embarcaciones que transportaban inmigrantes han sido descubiertas en aguas australianas desde que el Gobierno de centro izquierda suavizó en julio pasado el trato que brinda a los inmigrantes ilegales.
El tráfico de personas a Australia alcanzó su nivel más alto en 2001, cuando más de 1.200 inmigrantes llegaron al país, en su mayoría provenientes de Oriente Medio y transportados por redes profesionales de contrabando.
Los defensores de la inmigración afirman que durante 2008 se ha registrado un aumento del 12 por ciento en la cantidad de personas que solicitan asilo en todo el mundo, y que Australia sólo está recibiendo a una pequeña parte de ellas.
En 2008, la cantidad de inmigrantes que recibió Australia aumentó a 4.750, frente a las 3.970 de 2007.
