El operador por cable Liberty Global obtuvo el lunes el visto bueno de la Unión Europea para comprar por 3.000 millones de dólares (algo más de 2.000 millones de euros) Unitymedia, la primera adquisición alemana de la compañía tras su fracasado intento de hace casi una década.
Liberty Global, controlada por el magnate del cable John Malone, espera cerrar el acuerdo en la primera mitad del año. Unitymedia es la segunda mayor red de cable en Alemania tras Kabel Deutschland, con 4,5 millones de suscriptores.
"La Comisión concluyó que la concentración no impediría de forma significativa la competencia efectiva en el área económica europea", dijo la Comisión Europea en un comunicado.
Los vendedores son un grupo de accionistas encabezados por BC Partners y Apollo, que compraron Unitymedia por 1.500 millones de euros en 2003.
Liberty Global está presente en Austria, Holanda, el este de Europa, Asia y Latinoamérica.
Liberty Media International, de Malone, buscó comprar activos de Deutsche Telekom y Deutsche Bank en 2001 pero su intento fue bloqueado por los reguladores alemanes.
