La UEFA ganó 250 millones de euros con la Eurocopa 2008, lo que supone el récord histórico al superar en 27 millones las cifras de 2004, y aseguró que los beneficios serán suficientes para sufragar las competiciones femeninas y juveniles hasta 2012, así como los programas de entrenamiento y arbitraje.
El resto del dinero obtenido será distribuido entre los 53 miembros de la UEFA y se destinará también a cubrir costes administrativos.
La institución anunció que la facturación durante las tres semanas que duró el torneo en Austria y Suiza fue de 1.300 millones de euros, de los cuales más de la mitad provenía de la venta de derechos de retransmisión del evento.
Al menos 155 millones de personas vieron los 31 partidos en directo por televisión, según dijo la UEFA.
El coste de organización del acontecimiento deportivo ascendió de los 313 millones de euros que se gastaron en 2004, a 600 millones, en 2008.
La UEFA también publicó que 10.000 agentes de seguridad fueron contratados especialmente para la competición, y que los asistentes a partidos de fútbol se beneficiaron de 4.4 millones de desplazamientos en tren gratuitos.
