La Unión Europea acordó el lunes enviar hasta 350 polícias paramilitares a Haití en respuesta a los llamamientos de ayuda de Naciones Unidas para proteger los esfuerzos de socorro tras el devastador seísmo del 12 de enero.
Los ministros de Exteriores de la UE también acordaron abrir una oficina en Bruselas para coordinar las contribuciones militares y de seguridad a las labores de ayuda por parte de los 27 estados miembros del bloque.
Los ministros respondieron a una petición de más personal de Naciones Unidas después de que el organismo mundial anunciase que iba a sumar 2.000 soldados y 1.500 policías a la ya de por sí importante misión de 9.000 efectivos destacada en Haití.
Fuentes de la UE dijeron que los ministros habían aceptado que los estados miembros aportasen entre 300 y 350 policías paramilitares del estilo de los carabinieri o la Guardia Civil. La mayoría procederán de una fuerza policial de la UE que crearán Francia, España, Italia, Portugal, Holanda y Rumanía.
La pasada semana el bloque dijo que las instituciones de la UE y los estados miembros habían ofrecido más de 400 millones de euros en emergencia y ayuda a largo plazo a Haití tras el terremoto, que según las autoridades haitianas habría matado a 200.000 personas.
Los ministros de la UE también aprobaron una propuesta para crear un Cuerpo de Voluntarios Europeos con el objetivo de involucrar a la gente joven en labores de ayuda como los de Haití. Los ministros acordaron que este cuerpo especial debería estar formado para 2011.
