El Valencia, tras su victoria en Gijón ante el Sporting por 2-3, regresó a posiciones de Liga de Campeones siete jornadas después de salir de esos puestos en una temporada en la que había estado entre los cuatro primeros clasificados de forma consecutiva durante las primeras veintitrés jornadas del torneo.
El pasado 22 de febrero, en la jornada veinticuatro, un empate a uno en Riazor ante el Deportivo relegó al Valencia al quinto puesto de la tabla.
A partir de ese momento, el Valencia acumuló algunos malos resultados que le llevaron incluso a la octava posición, fuera incluso de las posiciones que permiten jugar al Copa de la UEFA.
Sin embargo, tres victorias consecutivas en los últimos tres encuentros, cuando se cumplen treinta jornadas de competición, han permitido al Valencia volver a estar entre los cuatro primeros de la tabla.
Para ello, además, han sido necesarios en los últimos partidos algunos malos resultados de los equipos que le acompañaban en la lucha por el cuarto puesto, lo que le ha permitido en esta jornada volver a las posiciones que permiten disputar el primer torneo continental europeo.
Con su victoria de hoy, el Valencia, con 49 puntos, ha superado al Villarreal, que perdió el sábado en casa ante el Málaga y que tiene 48 puntos.
En la presente temporada, el Valencia fue líder de la Liga durante seis jornadas en la primera vuelta, aunque su posición más frecuente ha sido la cuarta, en la que ha estado nueve jornadas antes de la de hoy.
