"Vi que venía un coche por la hierba, marcha atrás, el de Adrian Sutil, y no pude hacer nada", relató Alonso en La Sexta apenas unos minutos después de llegar al paddock. La carrera acaba de arrancar, pero el español no llegó a completar ni la primera vuelta. "Hemos tenido un choque desafortunado. Diez metros más y no hubiera sucedido, pero las cosas son así y ahora hay que pensar en la siguiente", añadió.
El incidente tuvo su origen en el intento de adelanto de Trulli a Sutil por el costado derecho de este. Había poco hueco, se tocaron y ambos perdieron el control. El Force India rebotó contra las protecciones y regresó de forma involuntaria a la pista en el preciso instante en el que pasaba Alonso.
El coche de seguridad hizo su aparición y en boxes hubo movimiento. Entre los que decidieron parar, Kovalainen y Raikkonen. Las prisas aturullaron al mecánico de McLaren encargado de levantar la paleta que indica la salida a los pilotos. Lo hizo cuando el repostaje no había finalizado, así que el finlandés arrancó de cuajo la manguera y la arrastró mientras goteaba abundantemente gasolina. Tras él salió su paisano y amigo Raikkonen, que recibió un baño de combustible. El calor del motor y otras partes del Ferrari provocaron una explosión que, por fortuna, fue leve y fugaz. Apenas chamuscado, Kimi pudo seguir y regresó a la pista.
Kobayashi (Toyota) deslumbró en su primer gran premio y acabó 10º, pero no le fueron a la zaga el resto de jóvenes: Buemi (7º), Liuzzi (12º), Grosjean (13º) y Alguersuari(14º). "Estoy feliz por haber podido acabar la carrera y porque sigo haciendo progresos y aprendiendo cada vez que salgo a la pista", declaró el español. "Creo que he vuelto a mejorar este fin de semana".
