El vicepresidente de EE.UU., Joseph Biden, llegó ayer de sorpresa a Irak, donde tiene previsto participar hoy en la ceremonia que servirá para poner punto y final a las operaciones de combate en el país árabe.
Según la Casa Blanca, Biden se entrevistará en Bagdad con varios representantes del Gobierno y participará en la ceremonia por la que el Ejercito estadounidense traspasará el mando a las fuerzas iraquíes.
El presidente Barack Obama tiene previsto dirigirse hoy a la nación para anunciar desde su residencia, en el Despacho Oval, el fin de la Guerra de Irak, que fue una de sus promesas electorales y uno de sus compromisos cuando llegó a la Casa Blanca.
Pese al fin de los combates, Estados Unidos dejará durante unos meses en el país árabe algo menos de 50.000 soldados, que tendrán como principal misión adiestrar y entrenar a las fuerzas iraquíes en materia de seguridad, lucha contra el terrorismo y protección de los civiles.
Según el compromiso suscrito entre los dos países, Estados Unidos abandonará completamente Irak en diciembre de 2011.
Este es el sexto viaje de Biden a Irak desde que asumió el cargo, en enero de 2009.
En Bagdad tiene previsto entrevistarse con el presidente Jalal Talabani, y el primer ministro Nouri al-Maliki, entre otros dirigentes, a los que reiterará el compromiso de Estados Unidos de ayudar al país a largo plazo.
También se reunirá con los dos vicepresidentes, el suní Tarek al-Hashemi y el chií Adel Abdel Mahdi, así como con el líder de la coalición Al Iraqiya (La iraquí), Iyad Alawi, y el líder del Consejo Supremo Iraquí, Ammar al-Hakim.
