A Whiter Shade of Pale, el mayor éxito de la banda de rock progresivo británica Procol Harum, es la canción que más ha sonado en público durante los últimos 75 años. Los siguientes cortes en la lista, elaborada por Phonographic Performance Limited, son Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen) y All I Have To Do Is Dream, de los Everly Brothers.
Gary Brooker, líder de Procol Harum y autor de la pieza, dijo tras conocer la noticia que el número uno suponía un "gran honor" para él. "Es algo que no me habría imaginado ni por asomo cuando escribí la canción", añadió el cantante, satisfecho con la popularidad de su one hit wonder (editado en 1967) y su condición, con el paso de los años, de clásico.
Detrás de ellas, se sitúan Love Is All Around (Wet Wet Wet), Everything I Do (Bryan Adams), Angels (Robbie Williams), All Shook Up (Elvis Presley, Dancing Queen (ABBA), Magic Moments (Perry Como) y White Christmas (Bing Crosby).
Entre otras canciones, la más antigua del top 75 es In The Mood, de Glenn Miller, datada en 1939. En el otro extremo, la composición más reciente lleva la firma de OutKast, quienes en 2003 lanzaron Hey Ya. Aunque no ocupan los diez primeros lugares de la lista, The Beatles se han colado en los puestos 11, 13 y 51 con Hello Goodbye, Get Back y From Me To You, respectivamente.
