Los arrecifes de coral son famosos por sus exigentes requisitos ecológicos, ya que suelen necesitar aguas cálidas, limpias y con gran aporte de luz solar, típicas de zonas tropicales. No obstante, en un cañón submarino del mar Cantábrico, un equipo de biólogos del Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO) ha encontrado un arrecife de coral a 800 metros de profundidad. "Es un gran descubrimiento, ya que es el primero de este tipo que se detecta en aguas españolas", según afirmó a Público el responsable de la investigación, Francisco Sánchez.
El equipo estaba inmerso en la investigación del Cañón submarino de Avilés cuando descubrió la existencia de otros dos cañones. "Al explorar uno de ellos, nos encontramos con el arrecife", explica Sánchez. Según el biólogo del IEO, "cada vez se están descubriendo más formaciones de este tipo por todo el mundo, pero su exploración es complicada debido a la profundidad a la que se encuentran". El arrecife tiene una extensión aproximada de 80.000 metros cuadrados y está compuesto principalmente por las especies Madrepora oculata y Lophelia pertusa.
Ya se conocía la existencia de corales aislados en aguas frías, "por lo que lo importante de este descubrimiento es que la agrupación de corales en forma de arrecife da lugar a un nuevo ecosistema al que se asocian otras especies, lo que crea un hábitat de gran complejidad", concluye Sánchez.
