Investigadores de EEUU han logrado identificar las células que desencadenan el cáncer de piel y han demostrado que es posible ralentizar el crecimiento del melanoma atacando a estas células con anticuerpos, según publican en el número que publica el jueves Nature.
Las células madre responsables del inicio de los tumores, capaces de renovarse y diferenciarse y responsables del crecimiento del cáncer, han sido identificadas en varios tipos de tumores. En este caso, los científicos descubrieron que los melanomas humanos que contenían células de tipo ABCB5+ crecían con mayor rapidez y se extendían con mayor facilidad que aquellos que no las tenían.
Evidencias preliminares indican que sería posible aplicar a estas células anticuerpos monoclonales que tendría efectos inhibidores sobre la proliferación del cáncer.
