El Sol registró la pasada medianoche una tercera erupción colosal en menos de veinticuatro horas como parte de la tormenta solar más poderosa en lo que va de año, informó hoy el Centro de Pronóstico Meteorológico Espacial.
La tercera erupción culminó a las 01.11 GMT del martes y emitió una llamarada solar del tipo X3.2, una de las más fuertes que puede lanzar la estrella, según los astrónomos.
Las otras dos erupciones ocurrieron de la noche del domingo al lunes, y ese mismo día, todas originadas en una mancha muy activa situada en el lado izquierdo de la cara del Sol opuesta a la Tierra.
'Evidentemente una región extraordinariamente activa se aproxima a la cara visible (del Sol)', agregó la nota divulgada hoy en el portal de la agencia conocida por su sigla en inglés SWPC.
Dos de las tres llamaradas solares recientes se han relacionado con explosiones gigantescas, llamadas eyecciones de masa coronal, que lanzaron al espacio material a muy alta temperatura y a millones de kilómetros por hora.
La mancha solar donde ocurren estas erupciones todavía no encara la Tierra, y los fenómenos fueron captados en cámara por el Observatorio de Dinámica Solar de la agencia espacial estadounidense NASA.
Cuando estas erupciones ocurren en la dirección de la Tierra, las tormentas solares de clase X pueden ser peligrosos para los astronautas y los satélites en órbita, e interfieren con las comunicaciones y las señales de geoposicionamiento satelital en tierra.
También pueden causar fenómenos lumínicos en el cielo terrestre cuando las partículas solares bombardean la atmósfera.
Los científicos han dado recientemente a la mancha solar activa la designación de AR1748, y es una de las nueve manchas solares activas numeradas y visibles en la superficie del Sol.
