El informe sobre el estado de las pinturas de Altamira responsabiliza a las visitas del deterioro que éstas han sufrido y asegura que mantener cerrada la cueva es la mejor garantía de conservación. "Las visitas inducen procesos de microcorrosión que la afectan directamente, disolviendo los soportes de las pinturas", indica el informe encargado por el Ministerio de Cultura al Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), cuyas conclusiones adelantó ayer El Diario Montañés.
El informe científico es taxativo respecto al daño que causan las visitas, que elevan la temperatura y los niveles de vapor en el interior de la cueva. "La entrada de visitantes provoca perturbaciones microambientales en la cavidad perjudiciales para la conservación de la misma y en particular para la sala de los polícromos", advierten los científicos. De hecho, el informe constata que las condiciones de la cueva han mejorado cuando se ha cerrado.
Sin embargo, el estudio no descarta que la cueva pueda reabrirse al público, supuesto para el que recomienda un control "exhaustivo". Esta es la opción por la que han abogado en los últimos años el Gobierno de Cantabria y el propio director del Museo de Altamira, José Antonio Lasheras, que ayer aclaró a Público que todavía no se ha tomado ninguna decisión: "El informe acaba de ser presentado y ahora se han publicado unas conclusiones, pero la decisión la tiene que tomar el Patronato del Museo de Altamira".
Este patronato, formado en 1979, está integrado por el Ayuntamiento de Santillana del Mar, el Gobierno de Cantabria y el Ministerio de Cultura como vocales natos, que a su vez designarán a expertos para participar en las deliberaciones.
