El director Peter Jackson acaba de iniciar en Nueva Zelanda el rodaje de El Hobbit, la precuela de la trilogía El Señor de los Anillos, tras superar meses de continuos retrasos, según ha informado el cineasta en un comunicado.
El director neozelandés, de 50 años, ha afirmado que el reparto, encabezado por Martin Freeman como el hobbit Bilbo Baggins y Ian McKellen en el personaje del mago Gandalf, ha terminado con los preparativos de la película.
Elijah Wood, Christopher Lee, Cate Blanchett y Orlando Bloom repetirán los mismos roles que encarnaron en The Lord of the Rings, ganadora de un total de trece premios Oscar en las tres entregas.
Problemas de financiación, un conato de huelga de actores y una úlcera de Jackson han puesto en jaque a la producción, que constará de dos partes, con un presupuesto de 500 millones de dólares (352 millones de euros).
Debido a los retrasos, el director mexicano Guillermo del Toro se retiró en mayo de 2010 de la coproducción de New Line Cinema y Metro Goldwyn Meyer, aunque continuó su colaboración en la elaboración de los guiones.
En octubre de 2010, las productoras estuvieron a punto de llevarse el rodaje a otro país tras los problemas salariales con los sindicatos de actores locales, pero el Gobierno neozelandés medió y aceptó modificar la ley laboral para salvar el proyecto.
La historia de The Hobbit transcurre en la Tierra Media descrita en la película The Lord of the Rings, el mundo de ficción creado por J.R.R. Tolkien, y está previsto que la primera entrega llegue a los cines en 2012.
