El primero, Hicham El Gerrouj, primer atleta en conseguir la medalla de oro en olímpica en 1.500 y 5.000 metros desde que lo lograra Paavo Nurmi en 1924. El atleta marroquí fue el rey del estadio olímpico de Atenas. En cuanto a la piscina, el cetro fue para Michael Phelps. El dios del mar consiguió ocho medallas, aunque no pudo superar el registro de su paisano estadounidense Mark Spitz: siete oros en Múnich 72.
La selección argentina de baloncesto dio la gran sorpresa al ganar el oro tras eliminar en semifinales al Dream Team de Iverson y Duncan. Kabaeva, Kelly Holmes, Bekele o Nomura fueron otros de los grandes protagonistas de la cita olímpica griega.
La euforia helena venía de unos meses antes ya que su selección de fútbol logró de manera sorprendente vencer en la Eurocopa de fútbol celebrada en Portugal. Con un juego rácano, ultradefensivo y gris, el grupo de Otto Renhagel batió a las grandes potencias. También en un estadio luso se produjo la muerte súbita de Feher, húngaro del Benfica que entrenaba Camacho.
España tachó otra de sus cuentas pendientes al conseguir su primera Copa Davis. La selección de fútbol sala revalidó Mundial en Taiwán, Schumacher sumó el séptimo título de F1, Freire ganó un nuevo oro en ciclismo en ruta y el Valencia de Rafa Benítez firmó su segunda liga en tres años.
