La secuencia generacional que apareció en 2001, en el baloncesto español, regaló a los dos sexos un equipo con el que colmar sus aspiraciones de éxito. Si entre los chicos, Pau, Navarro, Felipe Reyes o Garbajosa empezaban a sentar las bases de futuro con un bronce en el Europeo de Turquía; las chicas, que aún no habían encontrado el reclamo mediático de Amaya Valdemoro, se dejaron llevar por el liderazgo de Marina Ferragut -campeona de Europa en 1993- para subirse al último cajón del podio.
Desde entonces, el éxtasis ha convivido con cada aparición en un Europeo. Porque a los bronces de 2003 -ya con Valdemoro, Palau o Pascua en el equipo- y 2005, se sucedió el salto de calidad con la plata de Italia en 2007. Ayer, las chicas de Evaristo Pérez se colgaron el bronce ante Bielorrusia. Fue la consecuencia lógica tras la derrota con Rusia en semifinales, el segundo equipo del mundo, tras Estados Unidos.
Tras un inicio perezoso, en el que la solvencia defensiva se asoció a un pobre porcentaje de tiro, España dibujó un parcial de 12-0 (27-8, min. 14) para sentirse fiel a su rutina con el podio. Fue un segundo cuarto de contrastes. Ante la democracia en el ataque español, Bielorrusia impuso el recurso, errático en la mayoría de los casos, a Marchanka como única vía para recortar una distancia que no hacía más que crecer.
Al nivel de Ferragut
Cuando Valdemoro, Palau, Pascua y Aguilar pensaban ya en el hito estadístico -igualaban las cuatro medallas de Ferragut en un Europeo-, Bielorrusia se atrevió a creer. Sus contraataques redujeron la distancia a ocho puntos (39-31, min. 24). Entonces, apareció Montañana para asegurar el bronce. Anotó siete puntos consecutivos para que España calmase una caza que las bielorrusas se empeñaron en llevar hasta el último minuto. Sin embargo, la secuencia ya tenía su última muesca.
