El servicio de correos canadiense dejará de repartir cartas a domicilio dentro de cinco años. La medida, que se adoptará de forma progresiva, ha sido adoptada debido a las pérdidas de la empresa pública, achacadas al descenso de envíos y al uso masivo del correo electrónico.
Canada Post también aumentará un 35% el precio de las tarifas en 2014 para reducir su agujero económico. Para hacerse una idea, las pérdidas del tercer trimestre de este año superaron los 74 millones de euros.
La decisión afectará a más de cinco millones de viviendas ubicadas en zonas urbanas, cuyos inquilinos tendrán que desplazarse a buzones comunitarios para poder recoger su correspondencia. Canada Post, que también abrirá franquicias en centros comerciales, espera obtener beneficios a partir de 2019 con estas medidas, a las que sumará el recorte de puestos de trabajo. La compañía, que cuenta con 55.000 empleados, pretende prescindir de entre 6.000 y 8.000, principalmente a través de jubilaciones.
