La Academia China de Ciencias Sociales ha informado que en este país asiático hubo un 41% menos de páginas web al final de 2010 que las que había un año antes. Las autoridades chinas han endurecido las regulaciones en Internet en los últimos años y han lanzado una fuerte ofensiva contra los sitios de pornografía desde 2009. Los analistas han insistido en que pese a este drástico recorte en China se mantiene en el país "alto nivel de libertad de expresión en Internet", según publica la BBC.
Así, apuntan a que a pesar de la disminución del número de sitios, el número de páginas en las páginas web que no han sido cerradas se ha elevado a 60.000 millones en 2010, un incremento del 79% respecto al año anterior. "Esto significa que nuestro contenido es cada vez más fuerte, mientras que nuestra supervisión es cada vez más estricta y regulada", apuntan las autoridades.
Defensores de los derechos civiles llevan años luchando contra la censura de Internet en China, para conseguir hacer desaparecer los controles gubernamentales, conocidos como el Gran Cortafuegos de China. Una serie de sitios web son bloqueados rutinariamente, como las principales redes socialas, blogs y páginas de noticias.
El país asiático continúa en pugna con Google por "problemas" con su buscador en China.
