Aprovechando la presencia en París del ex secretario de Defensa norteamericano Donald Rumsfeld, varias asociaciones internacionales de derechos humanos presentaron ayer en la capital francesa una demanda en su contra por haber autorizado torturas en la base de Guantánamo y la prisión iraquí de Abú Ghraib. "Rumsfeld debe entender que no tiene dónde esconderse", dicen los denunciantes.
La base legal de la denuncia es, según el comunicado de las asociaciones, el convenio contra la tortura de 1984, ratificado tanto por Estados Unidos como por la República gala.
"Francia tiene una competencia establecida" para que su Justicia se ocupe de "la responsabilidad penal individual por crímenes de tortura si los culpables de ésta se encuentran en su territorio", explica la nota.
"Espero que la lucha contra la impunidad no sea sacrificada en nombre de la razón de Estado. Llamamos a Francia a negarse a transformarse en paraíso de criminales", dijo Souhayr Belhassen, presidenta de uno de los grupos denunciantes. El ex jefe del Pentágono se encuentra en París para participar en un debate organizado por la revista Foreign Policy.Ésta es la quinta demanda contra Rumsfeld por las torturas en Irak. Las otras cuatro, dos en Alemania, y una en Argentina y Suecia, no prosperaron.
