GUATEMALA.- La erupción del volcán de Fuego de Guatemala, ubicado entre los departamentos de Sacatepéquez, Chimaltenango y Escuintla, ha reducido ligeramente su energía en las últimas horas, aunque todavía registra explosiones moderadas.
Pese al descenso de la actividad, es posible que la intensidad de la erupción, la séptima del año, aumente de nuevo en los próximos días, señala hoy el boletín del Instituto Nacional de Sismología, Vulcanología, Meteorología e Hidrología (Insivumeh).
El flujo de la lava de la erupción, calificada de "efusiva", alcanza los 2.300 metros por la barranca de Las Lajas, mientras que la columna de humo se eleva 5.000 metros sobre el nivel del mar desplazándose en dirección sur-suroeste a una distancia de 20 kilómetros. Por esto, el Insivumeh recomienda a las autoridades tomar precauciones en el tráfico aéreo.
El pasado 20 de enero las autoridades cerraron el aeropuerto internacional de La Aurora, ubicado en la capital, por la caída de ceniza de otra erupción.
Durante 2015 el volcán, de 3.763 metros de altitud, ubicado 50 kilómetros al suroeste de la capital de Guatemala, registró un total de 14 erupciones.
El volcán de Fuego es uno de los 33 que tiene Guatemala y, junto a Pacaya y Santiaguito, se mantiene en constante actividad.
Este último entró el viernes también en fase eruptiva lanzando gruesas columnas de ceniza a una altura de 5.500 metros sobre el nivel del mar.
