La oposición protestó este lunes por la decisión del primer ministro británico, Gordon Brown, de poner en marcha una investigación independiente sobre la guerra de Irak en sesiones confidenciales a puerta cerrada. Diputados y familiares de los 179 soldados muertos en el controvertido conflicto exigen que las sesiones se hagan en público.
"Una investigación privada no es lo que el Reino Unido necesita", criticó Nick Clegg, líder del Partido Liberal Demócrata y principal abanderado de la causa por una revisión transparente del "más grave error en política Exterior" desde los años cincuenta.
Brown se escudó en cuestiones de seguridad nacional y logísticas para descartar una investigación abierta al público. La revisión, según anunció en los Comunes, será "totalmente independiente del Gobierno", tendrá acceso a todos los documentos oficiales, incluidos informes confidenciales, y será de un alcance "sin precedentes" en la historia del país. Seguirá el modelo de sesiones privadas establecido en la llamada Comisión Franks, que la ex premier conservadora Margaret Thatcher organizó para investigar la guerra de las Malvinas en 1982.
El comité investigador sobre la invasión y reconstrucción de Irak lo presidirá un antiguo alto funcionario, sir John Chilton, y estará formado por diplomáticos e historiadores sin reconocida afiliación política. El campo de revisión es amplío: desde septiembre 2001, cuando los atentados islamistas dieron un vuelco a la política antiterrorista británica y estadounidense, hasta julio de 2009, con la salida del país árabe de la práctica totalidad de las tropas del Reino Unido.
El calendario de la investigación juega a favor del Gobierno laborista. Chilton se pondrá a trabajar a partir del mes próximo con vistas a presentar resultados definitivos un año después. Para entonces, Brown habrá probablemente perdido su cargo, a favor del líder conservador, David Cameron, en las elecciones generales que han de celebrarse en la primavera de 2010 a más tardar.
"Es un arreglo del Gobierno para eludir conclusiones inconvenientes", denunció Cameron, quien ya presionaba hace meses por iniciar la investigación con los soldados aún activos en Irak.
