AUSTIN.- Normal Cooper, un afroamericano de 33 años, murió la madrugada del domingo en la ciudad de San Antonio (Texas, EEUU) tras recibir dos descargas efectuadas con pistolas eléctricas por parte de agentes de la policía local, según informó esta institución.
Según explicó al periódico local San Antonio Express News, el portavoz del Departamento de Policía de esa ciudad, Javier Salazar, el incidente se produjo después de que una patrulla de agentes respondiera a una alerta por "violencia intrafamiliar".
Al llegar al lugar, Cooper, "un hombre de una gran envergadura", se resistió a abandonar la vivienda, por lo que uno de los agentes trató de inmovilizarlo con una descarga eléctrica, según Salazar.
Como la descarga no logró el efecto deseado, el otro agente que atendía la emergencia también disparó su pistola eléctrica contra Cooper, que entonces sí quedó inmóvil y murió poco después, según el informe forense.
De acuerdo con los agentes, cuya procedencia étnica no se ha facilitado, Cooper estaba bajo la influencia de las drogas o el alcohol.
Los dos agentes han sido apartados temporalmente del cuerpo mientras la oficina de Medicina Forense del condado de Bexar investiga ahora la causa de la muerte.
Cooper engrosa la lista de afroamericanos fallecidos a manos de la policía estadounidense, cuyas prácticas están en entredicho sobre todo desde que, en agosto de 2014, un agente asesinó en Ferguson (Misuri) al joven Michael Brown, muerte que desató una oleada de protestas raciales.
A principios de este mes, un agente de policía de Carolina del Norte fue detenido después de que se difundiera un vídeo en el que se aprecia como efectuó ocho disparos por la espalda contra Walter Scott, un hombre afroamericano desarmado que trataba de huir corriendo.
También a principios de abril, un policía voluntario de Oklahoma disparó, supuestamente por equivocación, contra un sospechoso en el marco de una operación para detener a un traficante de drogas y armas, y le causó la muerte.
En todos esos casos, los fallecidos eran afroamericanos y los policías, blancos.
