El devastador terremoto del pasado 12 de enero en Haití provocó 112.250 muertos y 194.000 heridos, según estimaciones oficiales divulgadas hoy por la ONU. Además de las víctimas, Naciones Unidas estima que 235.000 personas han abandonado desde entonces Puerto Príncipe, la capital del país.
El mayor flujo de desplazados por la catástrofe se registró en el departamento de Artibonite, adonde han llegado unas 62.000 personas, por lo que se necesitan carpas y material de cobijo para la instalación de campamentos que puedan recibir a esas víctimas.
Entre tanto, entre 800.000 y un millón de personas están viviendo en lugares de cobijo temporal en la capital, según la Oficina de Ayuda Humanitaria de Naciones Unidas (OCHA).
Por su parte, la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) señaló que no se observan brotes de enfermedades contagiosas, como el cólera, el sarampión o la rubeola. No obstante, algunas ONG apostadas en el país, aseguraron a Público que la escasez de agua potable y de medidas de higiene en condiciones, podría dar paso a las enfermedades.
El organismo sanitario también indicó que el número de personas que requieren ser intervenidas quirúrgicamente va en disminución y que se está notando la necesidad de material de cirugía ortopédica y y de sangre.
En términos logísticos, el aeropuerto de Puerto Príncipe está recibiendo una media de 130 a 150 aviones diarios, "un flujo de naves que no se espera que descienda en el futuro próximo", adelantó la OCHA.
Las aeronaves de carga que no transportan artículos de urgencia requeridos en los próximos dos a tres días son desviados al aeropuerto de Santo Domingo, que también ha empezado a tener problemas de saturación, indicó la entidad.
