El secretario general de la ONU, Ban Ki-moon, ha propuesto a Israel que un comité presidido por el ex primer ministro neozelandés Geoffrey Palmer investigue el asalto israelí del pasado 31 de mayo al barco Mavi Mármara, de la flotilla humanitaria, en el que murieron nueve turcos, según informa la prensa local.
El panel estaría presidido por Palmer, experto en Derecho Marítimo y jefe de Gobierno de Nueva Zelanda entre 1989 y 1990, y contaría con representación israelí, turca y estadounidense, según la iniciativa, que aún no ha recibido respuesta oficial, agregan los medios.
La propuesta se ve con buenos ojos en el Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores y llega después de que las autoridades israelíes rechazaran el establecimiento de un comité similar al que determinó que Corea del Norte había hundido el pasado marzo un barco de guerra de su vecino del sur, precisa el diario Haaretz.
Mark Reguev, portavoz del primer ministro israelí, Benjamín Netanyahu, se limitó a confirmar que el jefe de Gobierno habló por teléfono con Ban, sin aportar más detalles.
El pasado jueves, el ministro israelí de Asuntos Exteriores, Avigdor Lieberman, manifestó su apoyo a que una comisión pública "abierta y transparente" investigue lo sucedido, aunque abogó por que esté liderada por un jurista israelí.
Israel asegura que sus soldados se vieron obligados a abrir fuego para salvar sus vidas de la "extremadamente violenta" reacción de los activistas que se encontraban en los barcos.
