PORTLAND (OREGON).-Los propietarios de una pastelería en el área de la ciudad estadounidense de Portland han pagado caro haber rechazado el encargo de una tarta nupcial para una pareja de mujeres lesbianas justificándose en motivos religiosos.
Concretamente, Aaron y Melissa Klein ya han tenido que indemnizar con 131.700 euros (144.000 dólares) a Laurel y Rachel Bowman-Cryer, tal y como asegura la agencia Reuters. Según el portavoz de la Oficina de Trabajo e Industrias de Oregón, Charlie Blurr, Aaron Klein ya habría entregado un cheque por valor de 137.000 dólares este lunes, que estarán en manos del Estado hasta que haya una sentencia firme.
Cuando los propietarios de Sweet Cakes by Melissa bakery rechazaron el encargo, el Departamento de Justicia del Estado determinó que habían violado las leyes contra la discriminación, ya que su negocio no está registrado como institución religiosa. Les ordenó pagar 135.000 en concepto de daños y prejuicios, y los Klein apelaron alegando problemas financieros.
Según Blurr, los propietarios recaudaron entonces cerca de 500.000 dólares mediante una petición de crodwfunding por internet para pagar esta indemnización, pero también han recurrido esta orden. Ahora pasará por la Corte de Apelaciones de Oregón, e incluso podría llegar hasta el Tribunal Supremo. El matrimonio homosexual fue legalizado en 2014 en EEUU, y desde entonces se han producido varias sentencias inéditas en la historia de este país.
