Era un secreto a voces. Desde la caída de Bagdad, en abril de 2003, los críticos a la guerra de Irak ya denunciaban los intereses de las grandes petroleras occidentales (sobre todo de EEUU y Reino Unido) en el oro negro. La Casa Blanca y Londres sólo hablaban de "democracia". Sin embargo, The Independent mostró ayer que un año antes de la invasión de Irak, los ministros británicos y las mayores petroleras del mundo analizaron planes para explotar el crudo iraquí.
"Irak es una gran perspectiva petrolera. BP [British Petroleum] está desesperada por estar allí y ansiosa de que los acuerdos políticos no le denieguen la oportunidad", según un archivo del Gobierno al que ha tenido acceso el periódico. Otros documentos indican que fueron varias las reuniones celebradas para evaluar la explotación de las reservas de petróleo. Las intenciones oficiales de la entonces Administración Blair quedan en tela de juicio.
Los archivos también muestran que la compañía Symons acordó presionar al Gobierno de George W. Bush en nombre de BP porque esta temía quedarse fuera de los acuerdos secretos entre Washington con las firmas energéticas de EEUU, Francia y Rusia.
