El secretario general de la OTAN, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, ha reconocido que la estrategia de la Alianza en Afganistán no ha sido la más eficiente, porque la responsabilidad individual de países sobre determinadas regiones afganas no ha favorecido la cooperación internacional.
En una entrevista que puesta semana publica la revista holandesa Vrij Nederland, De Hoop Scheffer comentó que "todos los países piensan que son campeones en reconstrucción, pero eso no ha estimulado la cooperación internacional de verdad, tanto militar como civil, e incluso en ocasiones le ha perjudicado".
El secretario general de la OTAN, que dejará el cargo el próximo 31 de julio, admitió que "visto desde ahora habría elegido una combinación más fuerte de esfuerzo militar y reconstrucción".
Además, el ex ministro holandés de Exteriores rechazó que su elección al frente de la Alianza Atlántica, acordada en 2003 y hecha efectiva en 2004, hubiese sido una recompensa por el apoyo holandés a la invasión de Irak en 2003 por parte de EEUU y el Reino Unido.
"Eso es un despropósito (...) y su mera sugerencia ataca mi integridad", afirmó.
