Juan Carlos Rodríguez Ibarra se retira definitivamente. Tras veinte años como secretario general del PSOE de Extremadura, completará en julio el relevo que comenzó en 2007 al dar paso a Guillermo Fernández Vara como candidato a la presidencia de la Junta de Extremadura, cargo que él ejercía desde 1982. El cambio de ciclo se consumará al asumir también Fernández Vara la dirección del partido.
La jubilación de Ibarra, que salvo empecinamiento de Zapatero dejará también la Ejecutiva federal, convierte al andaluz Manuel Chaves en el último referente de la etapa de Felipe González.
Si se exceptúa el hecho diferencial del PSC, que confiere un peso específico a José Montilla, y teniendo en cuenta que Chaves está plenamente integrado en el zapaterismo como presidente del partido desde el año 2000, el adiós de Ibarra implica el fin de las baronías que marcaron la vida interna del PSOE desde comienzos de los años 90 y, especialmente, desde la renuncia de Felipe González en 1997 hasta la llegada de Zapatero en 2000.
El PSOE pondrá en marcha en julio un proceso de renovación de sus direcciones federal, regional y provinciales que culminará en septiembre. La continuidad o el cambio vendrán marcados por los resultados electorales.
La pauta será de continuidad allí donde se gobierna, con la particularidad de la sucesión en dos tiempos de Extremadura. En Cantabria, a la vicepresidenta autonómica, Dolores Gorostiaga, le ha surgido la rivalidad de la alcaldesa de Torrelavega, pero en Ferraz se cree que revalidará la secretaría general sin problemas.
La renovación se producirá allí donde el veredicto de las urnas es claramente adverso, salvo en Murcia, donde repetirá Pedro Saura.
