El Síndic de Greuges, Rafael Ribó, ha demanat al Defensor del Poble intervenir davant el govern central perquè posi en llibertat al periodista i escriptor Hamza Yalçin detingut a l'Aeroport de Barcelona i que ara es troba detingut per una ordre de recerca del govern turc .
Segons ha informat aquest dijous en un comunicat, Ribó ha fet aquesta petició en qualitat de president del capítol europeu de l'Institut Internacional de l'Ombudsman (IOI-Europa) que "està seguint amb preocupació el retrocés de Turquia en matèria de drets humans".
El Defensor del Poble català ha destacat que les acusacions contra el periodista, que es troba a Brians fruit d'una ordre de recerca i captura de la Interpol, es basen exclusivament en l'activitat exercida com a periodista. "Això vol dir que no es compleix amb el requisit de doble incriminació, que és imprescindible per procedir a una extradició", ha subratllat.
Ha argumentat també que el conveni contra la tortura de 1984 i la jurisprudència del Tribunal Europeu de Drets Humans prohibeixen el lliurament de qualsevol persona a un estat en què pugui ser sotmesa a tortures o maltractaments.
Segons la seva opinió, la "fragilitat democràtica" de Turquia i la suspensió fa un any del Conveni Europeu de Drets Humans són motius més que suficients perquè el govern central denegui la petició d'extradició del periodista emesa per les autoritats turques.
El periodista té doble nacionalitat, turca i sueca, i la detenció ha tingut lloc per haver comès un suposat delicte d'insults al president i de vincles amb el terrorisme, en pertànyer al Partit-Front Revolucionari d'Alliberament Popular (DHKP-C).
