Unos 175.000 niños resultarán afectados cada año por desastres naturales en todo el mundo, según las estimaciones divulgada hoy Unicef y la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS).
"Las catástrofes naturales tienen un mayor impacto en la salud, la educación, la vida y el estado psicológico de la población más vulnerable, sobre todo de los niños, mujeres y personas mayores", dijeron hoy ambas organizaciones.
A modo de ejemplo recordaron que el terremoto ocurrido en 2008 en la provincia china de Sichuan afectó al 40 por ciento de los colegios de la zona, donde miles de niños murieron y resultaron heridos.
En los últimos años, muchos colegios fueron destruidos por desastres naturales, con la pérdida de vidas de niños y la falta de acceso a la educación que esa destrucción conlleva, señalaron las fuentes.
Por ello, el director de Programas de Emergencias de Unicef, Georges Arsenault, reclamó que "el colegio debe ser un lugar que proteja a los niños y su derecho a la educación".
En este sentido, las organizaciones recordaron que la construcción y remodelación de colegios y hospitales debe realizarse atendiendo a criterios de prevención de catástrofes naturales.
Además, señalaron que otro pilar fundamental para luchar contra estas catástrofes es la educación, tanto de la población como del personal sanitario, para poder reducir riesgos y saber actuar durante un desastre.
"La introducción del tema de reducción de riesgos de desastres en el calendario escolar permitirá a los niños conocer los riesgos y las acciones que deben ser tomadas para mitigarlos", dijo Arsenault.
En el sector de la salud, las organizaciones subrayaron que "México demostró que es posible convertir los hospitales en lugares más seguros, aplicando un índice de seguridad hospitalaria a cientos de ellos, que ahora son más resistentes".
