Mark Stephens, abogado británico del fundador de WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, sostiene que hay "poderes oscuros" que persiguen a su cliente y existe una conspiración para encarcelarle, según publica hoy "Evening Standard".
"Ayer vimos las sonrisitas de los políticos estadounidenses. La trampa se ha activado. Hay poderes oscuros en acción. Después de lo que hemos visto hasta ahora, podemos concluir que esto es parte de un plan mayor", afirma el abogado en declaraciones al vespertino londinense.
En sus declaraciones, Stephens acusa además a la Fiscalía sueca, que reclama en extradición al australiano por presuntos delitos de agresión sexual en ese país, de haber orquestado "un juicio público".
Según el letrado, Assange, de nacionalidad australiana, se ofreció para entrevistarse en Londres con los investigadores, pero éstos ni siquiera le han facilitado detalles de las acusaciones que pesan sobre él.
Un juez británico ordenó el martes que el australiano, a quien Suecia quiere interrogar sobre cuatro presuntos delitos de agresión sexual cometidos contra dos mujeres el pasado agosto, permanezca en prisión preventiva hasta que se celebre el 14 de diciembre su próxima vista de extradición.
Stephens confirmó hoy al periódico que planean volver a pedir a ese tribunal que conceda a Assange la libertad bajo fianza, que le fue denegada el martes en base al argumento de la fiscal británica Gemma Lindfield, en representación de las autoridades suecas, de que existía riesgo de incumplimiento.
El fundador de WikiLeaks y su equipo legal también han indicado que lucharán contra su extradición a Suecia porque temen que, de allí, se le entregue a Estados Unidos, donde algunos políticos han llegado a pedir su ejecución.
