La acupuntura podría no mitigar los sofocos en mujeres que estén pasando la menopausia, según ha demostrado una revisión de estudios previos sobre la práctica.
En un estudio publicado en la revista Climacteric, investigadores de Corea del Sur y Reino Unido dijeron que rastrearon la literatura médica explorando la eficacia de la acupuntura en el alivio de los sofocos, pero las pruebas eran escasas.
"Nuestros descubrimientos no dan pruebas convincentes de que la acupuntura es beneficiosa para mujeres que sufren sofocos menopáusicos", escribieron.
Muchas mujeres están preocupadas por los efectos secundarios de la terapia de sustitución hormonal (HRT) y optan por alternativas como la acupuntura.
Los investigadores escrutaron un total de 106 estudios, centrándose en los seis que consideraron más importantes para el estudio. Los seis probaban los efectos de la acupuntura real frente a los efectos de la acupuntura fingida.
La acupuntura fingida supone pinchar en puntos de acupuntura que no son relevantes para el tratamiento de los sofocos.
Solo uno de los estudios informaba de efectos positivos sobre la frecuencia y gravedad de los sofocos tras cuatro semanas de tratamiento, mientras que los otros cinco no recogían dichos efectos.
Edzard Ernst, profesor en la escuela médica Península Medicina Complementaria, recomendó que las mujeres que estén pasando la menopausia vuelvan al tratamiento HRT.
"Nosotros recomendaríamos siempre que las mujeres que quieran ayuda para sus síntomas menopáusicos consulten a su médico antes de seguir cualquier tipo de tratamiento", escribieron.
