Amnistía International (AI) aplaudió hoy la decisión del Tribunal Supremo de Estados Unidos de reconocer el derecho de los presos en la base estadounidense de Guantánamo (Cuba) a acudir a las cortes federales para reclamar su puesta en libertad.
En un comunicado difundido desde su sede en Londres, la organización defensora de los derechos humanos definió esa resolución como "un paso esencial hacia la restauración del imperio de la ley" en el país norteamericano.
Amnistía recordó que "es la tercera vez desde 2004" que el Tribunal Supremo rechaza los argumentos de la Administración del presidente George W. Bush en relación con la cárcel de Guantánamo.
"Ha llegado la hora de que el Gobierno de EEUU acomode sus políticas de detención y sus prácticas en la 'guerra contra el terrorismo' de acuerdo con la legislación internacional", subrayó AI.
En opinión de Amnistía, "la Justicia lleva retraso con los alrededor de 280 detenidos" que siguen recluidos en la base de Guantánamo, "muchos de los cuales han estado detenidos durante más de seis años sin acceso a ningún tribunal".
Estados Unidos -insistió AI- debería "cerrar Guantánamo sin demora" y "o bien liberar, o bien acusar y procesar a los reclusos encerrados allí en los tribunales federales de EEUU".
El Tribunal Supremo reconoció hoy por cinco votos a favor y cuatro en contra el derecho de los detenidos en Guantánamo a acudir a las cortes federales para reclamar su libertad.
