Las tenistas españolas Anabel medina y Carla Suárez ganaron el martes sus partidos del torneo femenino de Andalucía, que se juega en las pistas de tierra batida de Marbella, donde también ganó la serbia Jelena Jankovic.
Medina Garrigues, cuarta preclasificada del torneo, superó la primera ronda al vencer sin problemas por 6-1 y 6-3 a la bielorrusa Anastasiya Yakimova.
A su vez, Carla Suárez Navarro, quinta cabeza de serie, se impuso por 7-5 y 7-5 a la estonia Maret Ani, mientras que la italiana Sara Errani, sexta favorita, le ganó a la alemana Julia Schruff por 7-5 y 7-6 (8-6).
Jankovic aplastó 6-2 y 6-1 a la italiana Francesca Schiavone y avanzó a la segunda ronda del torneo. La serbia, número dos del mundo y segunda preclasificada, quebró el servicio de Schiavone cinco veces para tomar las riendas del encuentro.
En la próxima ronda se enfrentará a la tunecina Selima Sfar o a la española Estrella Cabeza.
Por su parte, la estadounidense Serena Williams, número uno del mundo y máxima favorita en Marbella, comenzará el miércoles contra la checa Klara Zakopolova, en un partido por la primera ronda.
La menor de las hermanas Williams, que está sufriendo algunos problemas físicos, viene de sufrir una inesperada derrota en la final del Abierto de Miami el pasado domingo, donde perdió ante la bielorrusa Victoria Azarenka, de 19 años.
Serena confesó que pensó en abandonar el partido, y los organizadores del certamen andaluz señalaron que se la veía cansada cuando llegó a Marbella el lunes.
