Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc dijo ellunes que los reguladores estadounidenses colocaron su fármacoexperimental contra el dolor causado por la osteoartritis en"espera clínica" después de que un participante de un ensayo deotra compañía desarrollara un desorden óseo grave.
Regeneron señaló que él y su socio, Sanofi-Aventis SA, fueroninformados a fin de la semana pasada por la Administración deAlimentos y Medicamentos de Estados Unidos (FDA por su sigla eninglés) que el medicamento REGN475/SAR164877 estaba siendocolocado en espera clínica.
La medida, que suspende el estudio del medicamento, se debióa que un paciente que participaba en un ensayo de otra firmadesarrolló necrosis vascular en una articulación. Esta condiciónse produce cuando el tejido óseo muere por la falta de suministrosanguíneo, lo que finalmente hace colapsar al hueso.
La medicina de Regeneron está diseñada para bloquear unaproteína llamada factor de crecimiento nervioso (FCN), que estávinculada con el dolor. Un inhibidor del FCN en desarrollo porparte de Pfizer Inc fue puesto en suspenso este año después deque algunos pacientes requirieran una cirugía de reemplazoarticular.
La FDA cree que sus preocupaciones sobre la seguridad podríanafectar a toda la clase de anti-FCN (o anti-NGF por las siglas eninglés).
La compañía de asesoramiento Decision Resources habíaproyectado originalmente que las ventas globales del medicamentode Pfizer tanezumab podrían llegar a los 1.200 millones dedólares, pero redujo el pronóstico a 200 millones luego de que elfármaco fue colocado en espera clínica.
Tanezumab era el más avanzado en su clase y el revés quesufrió complicó al resto de los fármacos en desarrollo, incluidoel de Regeneron. Johnson & Johnson y Abbott Laboratories cuentancon programas en estadio temprano de anti-FCN.
Regeneron dijo que actualmente no se están realizando ensayosdel medicamento para los que se estén reclutando o tratandopacientes.
