El Villarreal cayó eliminado el miércoles en la Liga de Campeones al perder 3-0 ante el Arsenal en Londres, que ahora se enfrentará con el Manchester United en una semifinal totalmente británica.
El encuentro de ida en el Madrigal había concluido 1-1.
Theo Walcott, Emmanuel Adebayor y Robin van Persie de penalti marcaron para el Arsenal, apeando de nuevo al Villarreal de la Liga de Campeones, como ya hiciera en 2006.
El equipo castellonense terminó el partido con 10 jugadores por la expulsión de Sebastián Eguren, que protestó la pena máxima.
En el otro partido disputado el miércoles, Cristiano Ronaldo marcó un gol en los primeros minutos del encuentro de vuelta de cuartos de final de la Liga de Campeones que permitió al United, actual campeón, continuar luchando por revalidar su título.
Ronaldo marcó un espectacular gol desde fuera del área en el minuto seis, suficiente para anular la ventaja de los goles marcados en campo contrario que el Oporto había logrado con el 2-2 de la ida.
El Oporto necesitó tiempo para recuperarse pero gradualmente comenzó a presionar y estuvo cerca de igualar en el minuto 20: El lanzamiento de falta de Bruno Alves pasó a escasos centímetros del larguero.
El equipo portugués continuó creando opciones en la segunda mitad, mientra que el United parecía contento con controlar la eliminatoria y apenas intentó marcar un segundo tanto.
La otra semifinal la disputarán Barcelona y Chelsea, que el martes eliminaron al Bayern de Múnich y Liverpool, respectivamente.
