Un atentado suicida contra una mezquita suní causó el viernes al menos nueve muertos y 33 heridos en la inestable provincia de Nínive, en el norte de Irak, dijo la policía.
La provincia está considerada como el principal bastión de los insurgentes, después de que la mayoría de ellos fueran expulsados de Bagdad y de la provincia occidental de Anbar por jeques tribales suníes aliados a las fuerzas estadounidenses.
Los atentados suicidas contra mezquitas suníes y no chiíes son poco habituales.
El autor del atentado se inmoló en Tal Afar, a 420 kilómetros al noroeste de Bagdad, durante las oraciones del viernes, dijo la policía.
Irak, el undécimo productor de crudo del mundo, ha registrado una drástica disminución de los atentados durante los últimos 18 meses, que distan mucho de la matanza sectaria en la que el país se vio inmerso hace pocos años.
Aún así, los atentados con bomba, tiroteos y otras muertes se producen de forma periódica y se prevé que aumenten de cara a las elecciones generales de enero.
Tal Afar, una localidad en la que viven principalmente miembros de la minoría chií turca, ha sido blanco frecuente de atentados, entre ellos dos perpetrados el 9 de julio, que causaron la muerte de al menos 34 personas y otro el 11 de julio en el que murieron otras cuatro.
