Al menos 598 personas han muerto o están desaparecidas tras el paso del tifón "Fengshen" por Filipinas, informó hoy la Cruz Roja local.
Las autoridades elevaron a 224 la cifra de fallecidos confirmados en inundaciones y corrimientos de tierra y se desconoce la suerte de otras 374 víctimas, más de 200 de ellas en la isla de Negros, donde se ha desalojado a 63.000 personas por el riesgo de riadas.
Además se reanudaron hoy las labores de búsqueda de unos 800 náufragos de un ferry hundido en la región central del archipiélago.
Esta mañana aparecieron 28 supervivientes del naufragio ocurrido a unos 150 kilómetros al norte de la isla de Sibuyan, donde zozobró hace 48 horas el transbordador "Princess of Stars".
Tras la suspensión ayer de las labores de búsqueda por el mal tiempo, buques de la Armada y la Guardia Costera salieron hoy de nuevo y peinan el mar para encontrar a más víctimas.
Los equipos de buzos volverán a entrar en el buque, que tiene un gran boquete en la proa central del casco, mientras las autoridades sólo han confirmado hasta ahora el hallazgo de diez cadáveres.
El "Princess of Stars" zarpó el sábado por la mañana del puerto de Manila con destino a Cebú, 600 kilómetros al sur de Manila, pero quedó varado a mitad de camino en Sibuyan.
De confirmarse la muerte de los desaparecidos en el naufragio, será el accidente marítimo más grave ocurrido en Filipinas desde diciembre de 1987, cuando cerca de 4.400 personas perecieron en el sur del país después de que el transbordador "Doña Paz" chocase contra un petrolero, en el mayor desastre en la historia de la navegación comercial.
En la capital, donde el temporal provocó la madrugada del domingo cortes del suministro eléctrico y arrancó árboles en amplias zonas del área metropolitana, los colegios se mantuvieron cerrados para poder arreglar los desperfectos.
