El vicepresidente del Comité Olímpico Nacional de Azerbaiyán, Chinguiz Guseinzade, calificó hoy de "objetiva" la decisión del COI de dejar a Bakú fuera de la carrera por acoger los Juegos Olímpicos de 2016.
"La decisión del COI es objetiva", declaró a Efe Guseinzade, al comentar la elección de Tokio, Madrid, Chicago y Río de Janeiro como candidatas a albergar los Juegos.
El presidente azerbaiyano, Ilham Alíev, había señalado antes de la votación de la Ejecutiva del COI en Atenas que había que ser "realistas".
Alíev adujo que, por regla general, las candidatas olímpicas nunca tienen éxito al primer intento, como es el caso de Madrid.
Por esta razón, adelantó que, en caso de no obtener el derecho a acoger los Juegos, Bakú volvería a presentar su candidatura a los Juegos de 2020.
Según el plan maestro de Bakú, el grueso de la inversión en infraestructuras se asignaría a la construcción de dos estadios, uno con aforo para 70.000 personas, que acogería la inauguración y clausura de los Juegos, y otro con capacidad para 45.000.
Además, la candidatura de Bakú contemplaba la construcción a 50 kilómetros de la capital a orillas del mar Caspio de una villa olímpica, además de una piscina, entre otras infraestructuras deportivas.
También se estudiaba ampliar y modernizar el aeropuerto internacional de la capital azerbaiyana, las carreteras y la red hotelera.
No obstante, según algunos analistas, el hecho de que Azerbaiyán sea vecino de Irán, país que mantiene una mala relación con Occidente debido a sus ambiciones nucleares, habría perjudicado notablemente sus posibilidades de ser sede olímpica.
Bakú, ciudad de 2,2 millones de habitantes, vivió su apogeo a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, cuando los hermanos Nobel forjaron su fortuna en el incipiente negocio del petróleo.
