El secretario general de la ONU, Ban Ki-moon, llegó hoy a Japón en la primera etapa de su viaje de dos semanas a Asia que también lo llevará a China y su país natal, Corea del Sur.
Ban, que se reunirá en Japón con el Emperador Akihito y el primer ministro, Yasuo Fukuda, expresó su deseo de que Japón tome la iniciativa para sustituir al marco post-Kioto en la lucha contra el cambio climático durante la reunión del Grupo de los Ocho (G8) que se celebrará entre el 7 y el 9 de julio en Hokkaido, en el norte del país.
El secretario general de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas apuntó que tiene la esperanza "sincera" de que los líderes del G8 sean capaces de tener discusiones profundas sobre cómo "progresar en el asunto del cambio climático".
En cuanto a la reforma del Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU, Ban se mostró de acuerdo en ampliar el actual formato de quince miembros, cinco de ellos permanentes y con capacidad de veto, aunque declinó opinar sobre si Japón debería obtener una silla permanente tras la reforma.
Ban Ki-moon ha animado recientemente a Japón a que envíe tropas a la misión de mantenimiento de la paz de Sudán, una medida que está siendo estudiada por el Gobierno nipón.
