El primer ministro británico garantizó ayer a Irán el suministro de uranio enriquecido para proyectos nucleares civiles si el Gobierno de Teherán pone fin a su programa atómico militar. En un discurso en Londres, Gordon Brown alertó sobre la "grave amenaza" del proyecto nuclear emprendido por el presidente Mahmud Ahmadinejad. Sin embargo, afirmó que "Irán está en su absoluto derecho" de construir centrales nucleares para asegurar su suministro energético y contribuir en la lucha contra el cambio climático.
El premier reafirmó la alternativa que Occidente ofrece a Irán: colaboración con Naciones Unidas y supervisión de la Asociación Internacional de Energía Atómica (IAEA), o aislamiento y nuevas sanciones internacionales. Con una señal positiva, Teherán se asegurará el abastecimiento necesario por parte de Rusia y otros países productores de uranio enriquecido para mantener plantas nucleares energéticas, según confirmó Brown.
La intervención del primer ministro corresponde a la ambición de Londres de reabrir negociaciones diplomáticas con Teherán. Coincide también con el ambiente de apertura del nuevo presidente estadounidense, BarackObama, que persigue la mediación de Rusia en la resolución del contencioso con Irán y su programa atómico.
Por ello, Brown centró su nueva oferta en el contexto de una reducción global de armas nucleares. Londres está dispuesto a limitar su capacidad nuclear ante un eventual avance en las negociaciones de desarme. "El Reino Unido ha recortado el número de sus cabezas nucleares en un 50% desde 1997. Si es posible reducirlas aún más, de forma que sea consistente con nuestra política nacional de disuasión, Reino Unido estará preparado a hacerlo", dijo.
