El director del equipo Astana, Johan Bruyneel, el hombre detrás de los siete triunfos en el Tour de Francia de Lance Armstrong, dice estar apasionado con el reto de llevar a un equipo impresionante a otra victoria en la carrera ciclista más importante.

El belga también dirigió al español Alberto Contador a su primer triunfoññ en las carreteras francesas en 2007, y dice que podría ñhaber abandonado este deporte hasta que Astana le presentó otro reto.

"Estaba buscando otroas retoas, así que al final de 2007 decidí que se había acabado ya para mí. Había ganado siete Tour con Lance y uno cñon otro corredor", dijo a Reuters.

"Necesitaba otra emoción, y entonces llegó la gente de Astana. Para mí no se trataba de ganar carreras, sino de cambiar un equipo, y lo hice en un año".

Astana tuvo que modificar el equipo a finales de 2007 después que los kazajos Alexander Vinokourov y Andrej Kashechkin, el italiano Eddy Mazzoleni y el alemán Mathias Kessler se vieran involucrados en un escándalo de dopaje que supuso su expulsión del Tour de Francia tras el positivo de Vinokourov por dopaje sanguineo.

El equipo financiado por Kazajistán contrató a Bruyneel en sustitución de Marc Biver, y este año, aunque no Contador no pudo defender su jersey amarillo en Francia, se llevó el Giro de Italia y la Vuelta a España.

El equipo se reforzó con otros antiguos corredores del Discovery Channel, principalmente el estadounidense Levi Leipheimer pero también el ucraniano Yaroslav Popovych, que llegaba del Silence Lotto.

"Estoy orgulloso de tener el privilegio de traabajar con gente como esa, y también creo que no es por nada que están en este equipo", dijo el que fuera ganador de una etapa del Tour en 1993.

"Incluso con ciclistas como Levi o Popovych no hubo apenas negociación, porque sabían que el equipo era el mejor para ellos", agregó.

"I have some critics saying, easy you just write a check and you get the best riders but I can tell you it's not the way it happens, the people inside the business know I'm not the best payer.

"It's for some reason that some want to absolutely be in this team.

"Lance rides for free, I did not write a check at all for him."

"Even with riders like Levi or Popovych, there was basically no negotiation because they know the team is the best environment for them," the 44- year-old said.

Armstrong and Contador will ride the Tour together next year after Armstrong, back in action after a three-year retirement, confirmed this week he would again take part in the famous race.

Bruyneel also believes that the addition of riders with strong egos to the squad can only be positive.

"You need to have strong egos, it lifts the level of competition within the team, it is contagious and if it is too easy, you end up with people without ambition," he said.

"You could be in the same team or in another squad, you know that if there are two or three guys better than you, they will beat you anyway."
